Carolyn Hatfield

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Carolyn Frances Hatfield, lovingly referred to by many family members as Neena, on June 1, 2021, at the age of 77.  She left us peacefully while sleeping at her home, listening to Louis Armstrong.  

Carolyn proudly graduated from The Ohio State University and was employed with Columbus City Schools until her retirement.  Carolyn loved sharing stories about her days with her students, and what a profound impact many of them had on her life.  She continued to teach many children in the family to read and do math, often using a Gameboy.  There was lots of lap time, love and smiles with Neena. 

Carolyn greatly enjoyed gardening, birdwatching, animals, and sharing her memories.  She always encouraged us to “Go climb the hills” and she would go with us every chance she had.  She told us stories about swinging from grapevines, eating icicles from the waterfalls and how much beauty there was to be found in nature.  She encouraged each of us to take time to be still and savor those moments under the quiet canopies of the trees. Her favorite question while in Kentucky was, “Do you want to walk up the holler?” and we did, all of us did.

She is preceded in death by her mother Elizabeth Stidham, Father Willie Hatfield, and Stepfather Edward Stidham, Grandparents Herbert and Fannie Patrick and William (Epp) and Zettie Hatfield.  Carolyn is survived by family members, Willie (Bonnie) Bowling, Rob Bowling, Pamela (Donald) Webb, Judy (Steven) Davis, Herb Bowling (Sean Lalik) and Alvin (Penny) Bowling, whom she referred to as her brothers and sisters.  She also leaves behind numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces special cousins and many special friends.  All of whom she loved deeply.  She will be missed tremendously.

A memorial service will be held at East Carter County Memory Gardens in Grayson, Kentucky on Sunday, June 27, 2021 at 1:00 p.m.
