Donald P. Malone, Grayson, Ky., died May 22, 2019 at his home. He was seventy-two years old.
Mr. Malone was born September 18, 1946 to the late Fred and Helen Thomas Malone of Grayson. He was the eldest child and proud brother to Michael (Rose) Malone, Bill (Jennifer) Malone, Marilyn Malone (Larry) Thompson, and Margie Malone Gough.
Don is dearly missed by his wife of fifty years, Rita McDavid Malone, his son Donald M. Malone (Jill York) their son Luis Martinez (Alison), his daughter Avery Malone (Jason Milstead) and grandson Aedan Milstead.
Don’s quiet wisdom and generosity was matched only by his strength of character, loyalty and delight in his family and friends.
His wit was second to none. All who spoke with him were sure to hear a shrewd pun or two and an entertaining story. He was able to take the most complicated matters and make them simple to understand and practical to apply.
Don enjoyed playing host to his large, boisterous family and found ways to make every gathering special. Time with Don meant good food, drink and laughter.
He was a member of the Grayson Lunker Hunters Bass Club, a talented photographer and an elder of Bayless Memorial Presbyterian Church. Don’s genius and creativity as an inventor led him to hold 27 U.S. patents.
A graduate of the University of Kentucky, he was a chemical engineer with 30 years experience in R&D and refinery operations with Marathon Ashland Petroleum. After retiring in 2000, he continued work in petro-chemical research and development later founding Advanced Carbon Products LLC. He operated two research facilities that will revolutionize carbon technologies for use in automotive industries, aerospace and the Department of Defense.
Funeral services will be Sunday, May 26, 2:00 p.m. at Bayless Memorial Presbyterian Church by Elder Josh Akers. Visitation will be Saturday, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Malone Funeral Home and after 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the church.
