Flora Gibson McDavid

Flora Edith Gibson McDavid, 92, of Grayson passed away peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Community Hospice Center in Ashland. Flora was born January 16, 1932, in Hitchins, KY, a daughter of the late, Van Buren Gibson and Myrtle Lee Tilson Gibson. In addition to her parents, Flora was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Elwood McDavid, a brother James Franklin Gibson and sister-in-Law Patricia Haney Gibson, nephew, Chuck Whitaker and great niece, Laura Whitaker.

Flora was a member of Iron Hill Church of Christ since she was 19 years old. She was the Treasurer for 52 years and had taught Sunday School. Flora taught school for 42 years beginning in two one-room schools, Salem from 1951 – 1957 and Fairview from 1957 – 1959. She taught at Millseat Elementary in Westwood, KY for 2 years and the rest of her career was spent at Prichard Elementary in Grayson, KY. Her passion was with 4th Grade, she thought they were the perfect age and loved teaching so much that she wrote her memoir “Life as a School Teacher in Carter County for 40 Years”. Flora enjoyed spending time with her family, vacationing in the Smokey Mountains, Barbies, watching NASCAR Racing, UK Basketball, anything Elvis and Montana Fouts play for Alabama.

Flora is survived by a daughter, Ramona Rae Bellew and son-in-law Allen Ray Bellew, three granddaughters, Vanessa Ann (Aaron Smith), Andrea Dawn (Jeffrey) Holbrook and Kaitlyn Rae (Quaid Mosley) Bellew. One great granddaughter, Kylee Sue Noel Smith; a brother, Phillip Caskey; two nieces, Reeva Whitaker (Kenneth) Conley and Belinda (Tom) Baker, three nephews, Doug (Patricia) Gibson, Don (Kim) Gibson, and David (Kim) Gibson; several great and great-great nieces and nephews and a host of friends, church family and extended family who all mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 27, 1 p.m. at the Iron Hill Church of Christ in Grayson, KY, with Bro. Bobby Bond and Bro. Terrell Webb, officiating. Visitation will be 6 – 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at Malone Funeral Home and 11 a.m., Wednesday at Iron Hill Church of Christ until the service hour. Burial will follow in the East Carter Memory Gardens.
