George Wilson Waggoner III, of Grayson, passed away at Community Hospice Care
Center in Ashland on November 22, 2018, after fighting a courageous battle against
dementia. He was 76 years old.
George was born on April 10, 1942, in Ashland, Kentucky, the son of the late Sada
Colley Waggoner and George Waggoner, Jr. He attended the University of Kentucky,
where he played Freshmen Basketball in 1960 for Coach Adolph Rupp. Upon
graduation, George came back to Grayson to join the family business as the Dealer
Operator at Waggoner Motors. He was also the Mayor of Grayson from 1989-1998,
and the registrar at Kentucky Christian University from 1998-2008. George was a
lifelong member of the First Church of Christ in Grayson, where he served as a
Sunday School teacher and was an Elder for many years. He was also a member of
the KCU Board of Trustees. Even when his health prevented him from attending
services, his deep, authentic love for Christ was the center of his life.
George loved his family fiercely and was a devoted husband, dad and papaw. He is
survived by the love of his life, his wife of 44 years, Terri (Wells) Waggoner of
Grayson, three daughters, Mary (Richard) Shultz of Versailles, Robin (Jonathan)
Daniel of Holly Springs, NC, and Erin Waggoner of Lexington; two sons: Brent
(Debbie) Waggoner of Lexington, and Chris (Tammie) Cool of Georgetown; and ten
Malone Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will
be Saturday, November 24 from 6-9pm. The funeral will be Sunday, November 25 at
2pm, with visitation beginning at 1pm. Both visitation and service will be at First
