Paul Allen Steele, 81, of Grayson, went to be with his Lord on Friday, November 10, 2023, at his residence. Paul was born on October 3, 1942, in Portsmouth, Ohio, a son of the late Gusta and Vivian Cooke Steele. He spent his early childhood on a small dairy farm in Greenup before moving to Grayson at age eleven. He attended Prichard Elementary and High School, and then graduated from Morehead State University. Paul retired from Armco (AK Steel), having worked there for nearly 30 years.
He grew up in the Baptist Church yet attended the high school youth group meetings at the Bayless Presbyterian Church in Grayson where he came to know his future bride, Aurella Jean Booth. They dated when they were both students at Morehead State College. He became a member of that Presbyterian church when they were married in 1965. He was a very active member there for decades as an Elder, a Sunday School teacher, and a choir member. After his wife, Jeannie, passed away, Paul attended the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Ashland, KY.
Paul loved to be involved with his children's activities and with his hometown community. He coached Little League baseball for several seasons, was an active member of the high school marching band booster club and attended each grandchild's events whenever possible. He sang in the Grayson Community Choir, the churches' choirs and Mens Choir; volunteered to sing for many funerals; and served on the Grayson Planning and Zoning Committee. Paul was a HUGE UK fan and tried to never miss a game on TV often calling his son-in-law Dewayne to yell together on the phone.
He was a voracious reader, particularly of his favorite authors like Louis L'Amour, Zane Grey, Tom Clancy, and John Grisham. He also loved to watch old movies, especially westerns. He not-so-secretly dreamed of living on a ranch or a cabin in the mountains of the Old West! He was the fearless leader of many family vacations which have supplied hours of embellished family stories since.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Aurella Jean “Jeannie” Booth Steele in 2011. He is survived by a son Barrett (Beverly) Steele of San Juan Capistrano, CA; daughter, Rebecca (Dewayne) Russell of Flatwoods, KY; brother, Kendall Steele of Grayson; grandchildren, Grace Russell, Will Russell, John Steele, and David Steele.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1pm on Friday, November 17 at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson, Kentucky, with Stan McDougal, minister. The visitation will be from 11am to 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital, 110 Conn Terrace, Lexington, KY 40508, or via their website at: Shriners Children's Lexington | Children's Medical Center (shrinerschildrens.org)
