Colonel Ralph E. Newman, 78, of Grayson went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday April 25, 2019 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington, KY. Ralph was born May 12, 1940 in Ashland, KY a son of the late Lewis “Crockett” and Jewell Lewis Newman. In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Newman Bunch.
Ralph began his military career in the Kentucky National Guard in 1956. In 1962, he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer through the Army ROTC program at EKU. Ralph retired as a US Army Colonel in June 1992, having served in multiple tours in Vietnam, and many engagements in the Middle East. After retiring from the Army Ralph went on to educate, mold and inspire many young men and women in the Ashland, West Carter and East Cater ROTC. Ralph was a Deacon at the Oak Grove Church of Christ. Ralph led many different activities where he shared his love for rock climbing and kayaking with his church family. Ralph spoke at many different Military events and was known for his well-composed and inspiring words. Ralph had a true gift of compassion for all of humanity. Ralph enjoyed participating in archeological excursions in Jerusalem, and most of all spending time with his loving family.
Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 11 years, Sandra J Thomas Newman; two sons, Eric (Stephanie) Newman of El Paso, TX and Greg (Jodi) Newman of Monroe, SC; two step sons, Travis McGuire and Tyler McGuire both of Grayson; six grandchildren, Ashley Newman, Brodie Newman, Josh Newman, Josh McGuire, Wade McGuire, and Randa McGuire, who he raised as his own; and a host of friends and extended family who all mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be 2 pm Sunday April 28th 2019 at the Oak Grove Church of Christ Life Center in Grayson with Donald M. Damron, Larry McKinney and Bradley Cotten officiating. Burial will follow in the Newman Cemetery in Ashland with full military honors performed by Kenova ALP # 93 and the US Army. Visitation will be 4-8 pm Saturday at the Malone Funeral Home and after 1 pm Sunday at the church. Condolences may be sent to the Newman family at www,malonefuneralhome.com
