Sharlette Johnson Bays, 90, of Grayson passed away March 22, 2018, at Kings Daughters Medical Center following a long illness. Sharlette was born August 7, 1927, in Dewdrop, KY, a daughter of the late Andrew and Cora Stegall Johnson. She was retired from Calvin’s BP and had been a former owner of The Shake Shoppe. Sharlette was a hard worker, often encouraging people to never retire until they absolutely had to. She enjoyed quilting, crafting and cooking, and was known for her famous pies.
In addition to her parents, Sharlette was preceded in death by six brothers: Ray Johnson, Roy Johnson, Sterl Johnson, Romie Johnson, Billy Johnson and John D. Johnson; a sister, Thelma Pennington Holbrook, and a son-in-law, Bill Hicks.
Sharlette is survived by her husband, John Willie Bays; a daughter and son-in-law who were her caregivers, Diane and Billy Smith of Grayson; two sons, Larry (Jean) Brown of Bloomington, Indiana and Gary (Donna) Brown of Poplar Grove, Illinois. She also leaves six grandchildren; Deanna Kerrick of Sammamish, Washington, Mike Brown of Irvington, New York, Deb Brown of Chicago, Illinois, Greg Brown of Frisco, Texas, Eric Brown Of Bloomington, Indiana and Chris Hicks of Grayson. She also leaves five great grandchildren: Ryan Kerrick, Kenzie Kerrick, Maxton Brown, Preston Brown and Olivia Brown. She is also survived by a long-time friend and former business partner, Frances Roseberry.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday March 27, 2018 at Malone Funeral Home with Bro. David Wilcox, officiating. Burial will follow in the East Carter County Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Monday and from 9 am until the service hour on Tuesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent to the Bays Family at www.malonefuneralhome.com.
