Viola Dyer Smith, 85, of Grayson formerly of Franklin Furnace and Ironton, Ohio went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. Viola was born February 24, 1933 in Salt Lick, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Arnold Dyer and Ina McClain Dyer of Grayson. Besides being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother she was known as “the shoebox lady” volunteering with Samaritan’s Purse – Operation Christmas Child for over twenty years. Viola was also an active member of the First Baptist Church of Grayson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years Jack W. Henderson, husband, Berry Smith, Jr., daughter, Jill Henderson Duvall, and grandson, Daniel Henderson. Surviving her are sons: Donald (Kelly) Cooke of Grayson, Zachary (Vicki) Henderson of Wheelersburg, OH, and Jack (Pam) Henderson of Corpus Christi, TX; daughters: Debbie (Jim) Everman of Grayson, Donna (Tim) Chamberlin of Wheelersburg, OH, Rachael (Paul) Whitmarsh of North Yarmouth, ME; grandchildren: Blake Cooke of Olive Hill, Sarah Everman of Nashville, TN, Keelie (Scott) Chatfield of Richmond, KY, Breanna (Ty) McDavid of Grayson, Leska Whitmarsh of North Yarmouth, ME, Delaney Whitmarsh of North Yarmouth, ME, Logan Whitmarsh of North Yarmouth, ME, Damon Henderson of Wilmington, NC, Eric Henderson of Bogota, Colombia, Derrick (Stephanie) Henderson of Pointblank, TX, Krista (Ricky) Stephens of Olive Hill, and Aaron Duvall of Olive Hill, and 8 great-grandchildren; brothers: John (Sue) Dyer of Grayson, Harold (Cita) Dyer of Grayson, Stanley (Carolyn) Dyer of Georgetown, KY, Tony Dyer of Grayson; sisters: Loretta Walker of Beaver Creek, OH, Garnetta (Ron) Walters of Grayson, and Jennifer (Roscoe) Rogers of Olive Hill, Crystal Young of FL, Robin Whaley of South Point, OH; and a multitude of wonderful nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be at the First Baptist Church in Grayson at 11:00 a.m. Monday with Josh Schmidt, officiating. Burial will be in the East Carter County Memory Gardens. Friends may call Sunday 6:00 -9:00 p.m. at the funeral home and after 9:00 a.m. Monday at the church.
